Have you ever been passionate about knowing how organizations work? Or how to create and promote a product or service? Is one of your favorite famous people a renowned business leader?

If at least one of the answers to these questions is yes, then you should probably be thinking about studying business at university. From my personal experience, pursuing a business and management degree can do wonders for your career and there are few other degree options which will prepare you for the working world to the same extent.

Here are five reasons why studying business is the best thing to study at university.

You’ll learn how to become an entrepreneur

When you’re studying business, you gain knowledge of a wide range of subjects. From finance and marketing to strategic management and design thinking, the variety is immense, and all of these skills will be essential if you want to start a business and become your own boss someday.

As the final project of my master’s degree, I will create a business and pitch the idea to a panel of judges from the business community. This will give me the opportunity to apply my knowledge as I design the structure of a company. If you’d also like to work independently by creating a start-up, then business is the career for you.

You get fantastic experience of networking

In life, it’s not always about what you know, it’s who you know too. By studying business, you’ll have the chance to develop meaningful relationships with your classmates, your lecturers, and guest speakers. Moreover, you can attend networking events to meet potential contacts, and even use tools such as LinkedIn to create your professional brand online.

By reaching the right people, you can be one step closer to achieving your goals of getting a job, or even becoming a manager in another country.

Few other degrees are as good at developing your soft-skills

Studying business means you’ll have a chance to develop various important skills in addition to your academic knowledge. These soft skills are things every professional requires in today’s workplace. In my case, I’ve been able to improve my public speaking skills through presentations, learn how to work in teams through group work, adapt my communication style when working with people from different cultures, and enhance my critical thinking abilities by writing essays and reports.

You’ll also feel more confident as you learn new things and leverage the opportunities that come your way.

Business degrees offer a fantastic, practical education

Many of the top business schools offer internships as a way for students to apply their knowledge. By gaining work experience, you’ll get an idea of how a company works from the inside and be able to relate your learning experience to the real world. An internship can also be a pathway to getting a part-time or full-time job.

Another way of getting experience is through volunteering, in which you can gain new skills while giving back to the community. In my case, my university offers volunteering opportunities for students on campus and I had the opportunity to volunteer as part of the Orientation Week Team. This involved welcoming new students to campus, which was both an awesome experience and a chance to develop my initiative and my communication skills. This is also a fantastic way to improve your CV as employers look for people who are committed to social causes.

The work you do will be helping other businesses thrive

If you want a degree which can help you give back to society, consider the fact the skills and abilities you’ll learn while studying business will ultimately be the key to helping companies be successful. If you enjoy tackling the big picture, using your problem-solving skills and helping others, then you could use your business degree as a stepping stone towards a career in consultancy.

Whatever you decide to do after you’ve graduated, studying business will help you tremendously at both a personal and professional level. So, take a look at this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject and choose a top-ranked university for business & management that’s near you.
