Studying in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has many perks. With its warm weather, luxurious architecture and stunning beaches, the UAE is a location where modernity meets tradition. Its high standard of living is complemented by the quality of its universities.
Made up of seven states - Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Sharjah, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain - the UAE has undergone rapid growth and has emerged as a major global business and innovation hub. As a result, the UAE has excellent job prospects for students and graduates.
TopUniversities spoke to the chancellor of one of the UAE’s most prestigious universities, Ajman University (AU), to find out more about how studying in the UAE can help you get ahead in your career.
Earn your degree from world-class institutions
The UAE is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities, with 14 UAE universities featured in the most recent QS Arab Region University Rankings.
These include Ajman University, which is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world, reaching the top eight in the UAE and the top 30 in the Arab region.
Ajman University chancellor Dr Karim Seghir (pictured above), said: “The government’s proactive outreach and focus on education over the last decades has shown results and we have a plethora of highly competitive educational institutions in the UAE today, including Ajman University, that rank among the best universities in the world.
“Our continued focus on diversity and inclusion, global accreditations and great career outcomes are some of the key strengths that consistently attract local and foreign students to AU.”
Benefit from global connections with institutions across the world
The UAE is exceptionally internationally focused and its universities have often developed links with universities around the world.
Ajman University is no exception. The school has a number of partnerships with leading educational institutions in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and the Middle East, meaning that students get the opportunity to study part of their course at Ajman University’s partner universities.
“The dual degree option we offer in association with partner universities is also highly attractive to students who get to experience the best of both worlds,” said Dr Seghir.
For example, AU’s electrical engineering students now have the opportunity to earn a master’s from Temple University in the US in addition to their undergraduate degree at AU.
“This opportunity to study abroad helps students gain a multi-cultural understanding, encourages appreciation of global issues, and helps them target opportunities across the world,” said Dr Seghir.
Build a diverse professional skillset
In the UAE, there is often a focus on practical learning, as students need the right blend of transferable skills to succeed in the UAE’s competitive jobs market.
Dr Seghir said: “Over the past decades, we have built a mature and strong ecosystem that ensures the employability of our graduates.
“This student-centric professional ecosystem, which includes prominent local and international partners, nurtures the technical and soft skills of our students, equips them with strong hands-on experience and forges their character.”
Ajman University encourages students to build up their professional skillset by offering various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, internship opportunities, career and professional advising events.
There is an experimental approach to learning both inside and outside the classroom. The school creates practical experiences for students, involving experienced industry experts in the learning experience.

Take advantage of networking opportunities with industry representatives
For universities in the UAE, employability is a top priority. Educational institutions in the UAE place a strong focus on helping students develop extensive career prospects through networking.
In addition to academic contacts, students will benefit from the university’s connections to some of the most sought-after companies. For example, AU’s Virtual Career Fair 2022 featured 30 leading regional and global employers offering internship opportunities, career guidance and employability tips to students at AU.
These networking opportunities help students secure esteemed internships, job placements and graduate jobs.
“Recently, 10 of our students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology were invited for an internship at Huawei, where they will have an opportunity to learn from leading technology and digital experts in the mobile applications industry,” said Dr Seghir.
The UAE is a leading business hub with numerous career opportunities
The UAE is a leading global business hub, with plenty of opportunities to work in international companies, making its buzzing cities the perfect place to progress your career. Better yet, if you choose to work in the UAE after graduating you will not pay any income tax on your earnings.
Whatever your career aspirations, the UAE will help you gain the skills and connections you need to succeed.
Ajman University alumni are placed in senior positions across different industries in the UAE and abroad. They work with some of the world’s leading employers, both global and regional, such as Microsoft, HP, Schneider Electric, Pfizer, Sanofi, Ikea, ADNOC, Etisalat, Emirates and Majid Al Futtaim. Some of them are employed in senior positions in the public and government sectors.
Others lead successful start-ups in the digital and non-digital space, taking advantage of the entrepreneurial skills they picked up at university.
What’s more, Ajman University also recently ranked among the top 3 universities for employer reputation in the UAE, in the QS World University Rankings 2023. So, a degree from AU is assured to take you places when it comes to a career in UAE.
