With tuition fees, accommodation costs, textbooks and activity costs, student life doesn’t come cheap. With so many expenses, you might find yourself in need of some extra money.

If you find yourself short on cash, here are five easy ways to make some extra money as a student.

Become a private tutor

Working as a private tutor is a great opportunity to share your interests and earn money on the side. An entirely flexible way to work, tutoring allows you to choose to work either online or in-person, set your own hours and choose who you tutor.

Becoming a private tutor couldn’t be easier with Superprof. It’s free to create a teaching advert on the website and you can set your own teaching conditions, schedule and fees. By becoming a private tutor on Superprof, you will be joining a community of more than seven million teachers, coaches, mentors and artists around the world.

The best part? You can also choose how much you get paid. What you'll earn will vary depending on the fees you decide to set. Superprof tutors typically charge between £10 and £200 per hour depending on experience.

Sell your old textbooks online

Most students have dozens of old textbooks lying around at home gathering dust. Why not sell them on and earn a bit of extra money?

There are several easy ways to do this. You could either sell them through a website like Ebay or Amazon; contact relevant student groups directly on Facebook, or even sell them back to your university bookstore.

Take part in market research projects

If you enjoy voicing your opinion and are looking to earn some extra cash, taking part in market research focus groups and online surveys might be a good option for you.

Online surveys

To start making money from paid online surveys, all you need to do is sign up for market research focus groups and wait for them to email you surveys.

These survey groups usually operate on a points system, where the points you earn from completing survey will translate into cash or vouchers. According to Money Saving Expert, you could earn between £200 and £800 per year.

Focus groups

Focus groups typically pay more per session than online surveys, but you may have to attend them in person. Focus groups will ask your opinion about a particular product or marketing campaign. They will typically pay you between £40 and £250 per session.

Secure an internship

Internships are a great way to stand out in a competitive job market once you graduate. You will improve your employment prospects, improve your network connections and build up a host of transferrable skills. They can also be a good way to earn money.

Although internships typically only last around 3 to 12 weeks, they can pay quite well. Glassdoor estimates that on average, students can earn the equivalent of a £33,000 annual salary during an internship.

Work on campus

There are many advantages to getting a part-time job on-campus. You will be working close to your lectures, you'll meet loads of new people and most universities offer extremely flexible contracts to enable you to work around your studies.

There are plenty of roles available to students who want to work on campus; from hospitality to retail to student ambassador work. These roles typically pay minimum wage, although they can be a flexible way to earn money while studying.
