The mission of  PhD in Biomedical Engineering  is culturing a new generation of capable biomedical engineers with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills for biomedical related professional fields. A biomedical engineer uses traditional engineering expertise to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine, providing an overall enhancement of health care. Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people, to partake of the excitement of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care. The biomedical engineer works with other health care professionals including physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians. Biomedical engineers may be called upon in a wide range of capacities: to design instruments, devices, and software, to bring together knowledge from many technical sources to develop new procedures, or to conduct research needed to solve clinical problems.

More programs from the university

The newly consolidated National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has a faculty of 1,400 and a student body of over 17,000, with a total of nine campuses located across different cities in Taiwan. NYCU is made up of more than 19 different colleges and offers almost 100 degree programs, ranging from Computer Science and Biomedical Science to Humanity and Social Science, underpinned by innovative and cutting-edge research in electronic information technology and medical care as well as academia-industry cooperation. NYCU has six newly established research centers and institutes and has one university hospital. As Taiwan’s first university providing engineering module for medical students, NYCU established physician-engineering program to nurture future physician innovators to improve the lives of patients. NYCU would bring new strengths to medical research and create a new paradigm for healthcare with artificial intelligence, big data, remote sensing, and other new technologies.

Our missions are:

1.Developing a new model for cultivating interdisciplinary talent in information technology and medical care, with an emphasis on the intersection of humanities, medicine, health, science, and technologies.
2.Establishing collaboration between campuses and strengthening online learning systems: creating online distance education programs, producing high-quality interactive e-learning materials and online courses, creating virtual clinical learning environment, etc.
3.Incorporating teaching and research resources to foster the next generation of talent with the specialization in healthcare and information technologies.
4.Integrating the expertise of different campuses to bring forth transdisciplinary curriculums and programs and promoting cross-disciplinary kills and hand’s-on learning through curriculum reforms.
5.Refining the structure and contents of General Education to expand the horizon of knowledge and learning experiences of students.

As a part of the commitment to internationalization, NYCU is expanding partnerships with leading industries and prominent academic or research institutes around the world via exchange student programs, dual degree programs, research visits and practical trainings or internships. Currently NYCU has signed about 570+ collaboration agreements with almost 300 international partner institutions. NYCU also has an increasingly internationalized campus and has attracted students from more than 60 countries. As the University continues the drive for internationalization, it is constantly looking for opportunities for collaboration and exchange in all areas.

Combining the expertise in engineering technology and healthcare, NYCU is destined to pursue excellence in research with commitment to be an incubator of pioneers and leaders in both high-tech and healthcare industries.
