The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject features over 600 of the top higher education institutions to study physics and astronomy

The QS University Rankings by Subject are based on five indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper, international research network and H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). Top universities for physics in the US and Canada 

The United States has over 100 of the best universities for studying physics in the world. Of these, several can be found in the world top ten. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scores impressively for academic and employer reputation, as well as H-index citations.  

Other notable US universities include University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), Yale University and Columbia University. All these universities scored highly in the research citations per paper indicator, representing the quality of the schools’ research.  

Canada is home to many universities offering physics courses, including University of Toronto and University of British Columbia.

Top universities for physics in Europe 

Europe hosts over 250 of the best global universities for physics. Of these, a significant number are in the United Kingdom. The University of Oxford and University of Cambridge are joined by other notable UK universities including University College London (UCL), the University of Manchester and University of Edinburgh.

Germany is well-known for its focus on sciences and is the third largest contributor of Nobel laureates in physics. Technical University of Munich is one of the leading universities in Germany for physics.

Italy is home to Sapienza - Università di Roma among others. France also performs well this year, with Université Paris-Saclay one of many French universities to score highly.

The Netherlands has several universities including Delft University of Technology, while Switzerland's ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) also score impressively highly.

Top universities for physics in Australia and New Zealand 

Australia has an impressive number of universities in this year’s physics school rankings and New Zealand is also represented.

From the list of Australia’s top universities for physics, Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Melbourne both earned high scores for research citations per paper. 

Over in New Zealand, the University of Auckland also earns a high score for citations per paper.  

Top universities for physics in Asia 

Over 150 of the best global universities for physics are found in Asia. Of these, an impressive number are in Mainland China. Tsinghua University earned an incredibly high score for H-Index and for academic reputation. Peking University is another top mainland Chinese university this year.

Japan demonstrates strong performance in this year's rankings. The University of Tokyo achieves a top score for H-index citations. South Korea has over 20 universities in this year’s rankings including Seoul National University (SNU). 

Armenia, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan are each represented in this year's rankings, as are Indonesia, Iran, Thailand, Singapore and United Arab Emirates. Singapore's National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University have both scored well.

In the subject rankings for physics and astronomy, India is represented by many institutions, with the Indian Institute of Science, performing particularly well.

Taiwan also performs well, represented by several universities including National Taiwan University (NTU) and National Tsing Hua University. Out of the universities based in Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is one of the most notable.

Top universities for physics in Latin America      

Latin America is home to over 30 universities offering physics programmes this year. Brazil's Universidade de São Paulo is one of the region's top performers as is Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Several universities from Mexico are included in the top universities to study physics, with Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) scoring particularly well for their international research network.  

Among the universities for physics in Argentina, Universidad de Buenos Aires scores well for research citations per paper.  

Top universities for physics in Africa and the Middle East 

In this year's best universities for physics in Africa, there are universities from Egypt (including Cairo University and Ain Shams University) and also South Africa (including the University of Cape Town).

Meanwhile over in the Middle East, there are over 20 universities in this year’s subject ranking for physics. Among these universities, Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Turkey are all represented.
