After a very successful recruiting year in 2015 (we added three brilliant new PhD students to our group), our department has decided that we will not accept new students in 2016. We do expect to bring in several new students in 2017. The Gatton College's doctoral program in management prepares students for successful academic careers at research-intensive universities. Our doctoral students work closely with the world-class faculty on cutting-edge research. Admission is competitive. We typically accept around 10% of applicants. Successful applicants tend to have competitive GMAT scores (the average for the incoming class of 2013 is above 720), but GMAT scores are not the only factor we consider: We also pay close attention to letters of recommendation, past academic achievement, and the statement of purpose (which should clearly convey why the applicant thinks our program is the right fit given her/his research interests). What sets the Gatton Management Area doctoral program apart? World-Class Faculty The Gatton College has assembled a productive and cohesive group of management scholars who are exceptionally committed to the development and success of doctoral students. Members of the faculty are engaged in research in a range of domains, including business strategy, social networks (including online social networks), decision support systems and information systems, human resource management, and organizational behavior and theory. Most of the faculty members are currently serving or have recently served as editors and editorial board members of some of the most influential research journals in organizational studies and information systems research. Faculty and doctoral students collaborate on conducting and publishing cutting-edge research, and they regularly connect with the "real-world" by working on various collaborations with partners in for-profit and non-profit organizations. Our doctoral graduates have become business school faculty at major research universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton, Emory University, Tulane University, Penn State, Michigan State, University of Missouri, Clemson, the University of Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, Queen's University, University of Illinois-Chicago, William & Mary, and Boston College. Part of a Comprehensive Major Research University As a doctoral student in a major comprehensive research university, you will collaborate with scholars in related fields including public policy, economics, psychology, and sociology. This contact will allow you to develop research questions that are interesting and important to a variety of fields of study. Intensive, Personal Attention We pride ourselves on providing close individualized attention to our doctoral students through an apprenticeship model designed to nurture future thought leaders. Doctoral students work on projects they initiate and design as well as projects initiated by professors. Our students have published articles in the best research journals in our field and have won research awards at annual research conferences of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society.
