With a literature concentration, you will learn to appreciate and understand the conventions of fiction, poetry, drama, and the essay. Fundamental questions will be raised about the nature of literature: What is it? Why read it? How is life transformed into imaginative works and how do they transform our lives? Literature courses focus on close reading and analysis to develop your critical skills and to enrich your emotional and intellectual experience of literary texts. The Literature concentration focuses on reading and analyzing a variety of English-language literature from around the world, both historic and contemporary. Students gain important skills in research, critical thinking, and written expression. Through spirited discussion and debate of complex issues such as race, power, and identity as these issues interact with historical context and genre, students practice oral expression as well.
