The Bachelor of Fine Arts Track in Musical Theatre serves those students interested in a career on the musical theatre stage. It is offered for students who, upon graduation, plan to pursue a specialized career in professional theatre. Because of its geographic location, UCF is a top choice for students interested in musical theatre. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and the budding expansion of the arts in Central Florida make it necessary for students to receive advanced studies in acting, musical theatre voice, and dance. Work within the BFA program requires energy and dedication; therefore, other part-time study or outside employment is generally impossible. BFA standards are high, both for admission and for continuation in the program. Production assignments are regulated to serve the artistic growth of students, coordinating production experience with classroom exploration. The Theatre B.F.A. Design and Technology specialization is a 129-hour degree program designed to prepare students for careers in the design and technology fields of theatre and entertainment. Class work is augmented with a wide variety of practical production experiences in the areas of scenic, costume, lighting and sound design. The first two years of the program focus on technical skills, theory, script analysis, theatre history, dramatic literature, drafting, visual Arts, 2-D and 3-D CAD. Students are evaluated annually and must meet professional standards to successfully complete the B.F.A. During the junior and senior years emphasis is on specialization in comprehensive technology or design training. Qualified students have the opportunity to assist principal designers and technical directors and may be selected to design and execute designs for main stage productions. The senior year is highlighted by the professional internship continuing the student's preparation for entry level positions in the commercial theatre or for further study in graduate school. The senior year is also spent in preparing the student's professional portfolio which is essential for those planning to enter the highly competitive job market.
