The School Counseling track is designed for the student who plans to seek certification as a professional school counselor in Pre-K through post-secondary school settings. We have designed this website to be helpful to prospective students, current students, and program alumni. The Counselor Education Program emphasizes a holistic approach to counseling. Counselors assist clients in achieving optimal personal, educational, and vocational development. Counselors are proactive "agents of change". To facilitate change, an individual must be fully accepted as a person of worth, dignity, and potential. Counseling assists individuals in understanding themselves, making the most of their own qualities and making their own unique contributions to a multicultural society. The School Counseling track in Counselor Education Program seeks to develop knowledgeable, skilled and reflective professionals who are effective change agents and advocates for youth, families, and communities of varying abilities, cultural heritages and socioeconomic backgrounds. The program and track make a conscious effort to prepare students to work with youth and parents/caregivers from the varied cultural backgrounds, economic levels, and value orientations found in contemporary Florida. In addition, it is important that our graduates feel capable of, and committed to, assuming leadership roles in the fields of school counseling. For us, leadership implies having the commitment and skills to not only assist individual youth, parents/caregivers, and teachers but to make a constructive contribution to the improvement of our profession, communities, and schools as well.
