Texas is a thriving economic hub and a leading creator of jobs in the US. There are plenty of reasons to study a business master’s in Texas, not least of all because of the extensive employment opportunities on offer.
More than 50 companies headquartered in Texas are on the Fortune 500 list, benefiting from the state’s extensive infrastructure and skilled workforce, including Capital One, Toyota, Boeing and BP.
The University of Texas at Arlington is the largest university in north Texas, located in the heart of Dallas-Fort Worth. It offers a range of business master’s programmes, including three MBA degrees. The university has more than 100 years of academic excellence and tradition and helps students develop critical thinking skills through their academic, internships and research programmes.
Here are four things you can expect from studying a business master’s in Texas.
Your degree will be very well respected by employers in Texas
If you’re looking to work in Texas after graduating, you’ll be pleased to learn that business degrees from Texan universities are very well respected by employers in the surrounding area, and universities often have ties with local industry to help you gain the work experience you need.
At the University of Texas at Arlington, you’ll receive career support throughout your degree. UTA’s Career Development Center offers a variety of services to help you land your perfect job.
Not only will your business school help hone your job application, but you’ll also get access to exclusive jobs and internships and have the opportunity to take part in a mentorship programme. At UTA, an average of 104 internships are completed each semester.
The university hosts an average of 25 to 30 career events each year, which include career services events, symposiums, corporate recruiter visits and workshops.
As a result, UTA’s business master’s students have gone on to work at high-profile companies such Baylor Scott & White, Cyxtera Technologies, Exxon Mobil, Fidelity Investments, GM Financial, KPMG, Lockheed Martin, Oncor, PERI Software Solutions and Whitley Penn.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to network
One of the major benefits of studying a business master’s in Texas is the opportunity to meet and connect with representatives from some of these world-renowned businesses.
Your business school will help you build the essential connections needed to succeed in your industry. At UTA, for example, the MBA Student Association partners with corporations and alumni to host around four corporate networking and guest speaker events each semester.
Your business master’s programme might also offer its own networking opportunities which are relevant to your chosen industry. The master’s in business analytics at UTA hosts an annual Analytics Symposium, bringing together industry experts and students in a learning environment that combines tech talks and networking.
You’ll gain industry-recognised qualifications
Depending on the programme you study, you might gain an industry-recognised qualification as part of your degree, or become qualified to reach the next stage of your professional training.
For example, UTA’s accounting programme meets the requirements of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. This means that once the programme is completed, UTA students can then take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.
Additionally, a business master’s may also make it easier to pass an industry standard qualification that you need to work in a specific role. UTA’s MSc Accounting graduates have a 74 percent Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam pass rate for first-time test takers. By comparison, the national average for first-time test takers is a lot lower, at around 45 to 55 percent.
Also, UTA’s master’s in human resource management curriculum aligns with the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) recommended requirements for HR degree programmes. The programme encourages students to participate in SHRM as it comes with various networking opportunities, workshops and employment connections.

You’ll be supported in your entrepreneurial ventures
Texas is known for its rich history of innovation and entrepreneurships, home to 3.1 million small businesses. Texas offers a host of resources and support to individuals looking to start their own business.
UTA’s Department of Management hosts the Maverick Entrepreneur Program and Award Fund, which was established to encourage students to explore and express their business ideas in a friendly and encouraging environment.
The award fund grants entrepreneurial students the opportunity to compete for up to $40,000 (~£33,100) in venture development funds.
The competition is split into two parts. In the first part, each student will submit a three-minute video pitch of a new venture idea, which is then evaluated. The winners from this round will present a six-minute pitch about their idea to a panel of judges. Those who are successful in this round will then participate in the second part of the competition, which involves mentoring, coaching, and access to other resources and the opportunity to participate in a second pitch competition.
