If you’re looking for a postgraduate degree to elevate your artistic ambitions and help you make a career out of your natural creativity, choosing to study in one of the most beautiful and artistic cities in the world is a good start.
That’s definitely how Mexican student Antonio Ramirez, 25, felt when choosing to enrol at MJM Graphic Design. Based in Paris, Antonio has been able to draw inspiration from the city while furthering his career ambitions and building valuable relationships with peers and faculty.
Antonio shared with us some thoughts on his journey at MJM Graphic Design so far, and his advice for any future applicants.
Why MJM Graphic Design?
MJM Graphic Design has shaped the creative talents of its students for over 40 years. Its prestigious reputation attracts students like Antonio from all around the world, with campuses across France providing a range of dynamic learning environments.
MJM’s students are taught by experts in industry, with a focus on developing practical skills that will help each individual maximise their employability in a competitive job market.
For Antonio, the chance to study abroad and at such an exalted institution was a no-brainer.
“When I was back in Mexico, I was in my comfort zone. I decided to do a master’s in art direction as it’s something I really wanted to do since I was a young teenage boy. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to move abroad to really experience different cultures and to study in another country that’s very different to Mexico.”
As well as art direction, MJM offers a range of subjects including graphic design, interior design, fashion, web design and photography.
Once he’d made the decision to apply to MJM, he found the process very straightforward. The school provides support throughout admissions, as well as connecting applicants with services and associations that can help with finding accommodation and other administrative tasks ahead of arrival in France.
Antonio said: “The application process was very easy and was through the French embassy in Mexico. It was made simple by the fact the MJM Graphic Design team were always there for me. If I needed a document, if I didn’t understand something, I could reach out to them and they would answer me very quickly.”
Studying in Paris
MJM has a range of campuses but it’s the Paris campus which most appealed to Antonio.
He said: “I partly chose MJM Graphic Design, because they provide the option to study in different cities in France. I chose Paris for this year, and it’s been very nice so far. I got to meet my classmates and the teachers I had while distance learning.”
Located in the heart of the 10th arrondissement along the Canal Saint-Martin, the school’s Paris campus is their international campus which means it welcomes students from all around the world, becoming a home from home for all of them.
All international arrivals benefit from an integration week which allows them to explore the city and campus through workshops, cultural visits and immersive activities. These events help students adapt to life in France while also providing opportunities for personal development.
Easily accessible from public transport, the Paris campus is also ideally located for students seeking inspiration from the city’s cultural highlights thanks to its central location. Design students can benefit from access to industry events and networking opportunities, while also exploring the city’s many museums and galleries in their spare time.
Preparing for employment
Given the highly competitive nature of the job market for creative industries, MJM see it as crucial that all their students are well-prepared for the working world.
As well as access to industry connections and internship opportunities, students such as Antonio also benefit from being able to work in industry alongside their studies.
Antonio explained: “One of the reasons why this degree appealed to me is because it provides the opportunity to participate in a work-study programme, which means that you can study at the same time you work and gain experience in the professional sector. Everything I see in school, I get to practice and do it in the company I’m currently working for.”
This close connection between the classroom and the workplace is aided by the fact that faculty focus on the practical as well as the theoretical, drawing on their own industry experience to guide the curriculum.
Antonio said: “One thing I really like about MJM Graphic Design is the teachers. It's not just someone talking about theory in general, they’re really professionals. The classes are not boring because we get to see the real professionals in your area.”
Advice for future students
When asked for his advice for any international students considering applying to study in Paris with MJM Graphic Design, Antonio assured us: “You’ll never feel like you’re alone in this country, in this different culture, because there are always people who are going to be there for you and be your friends.”
This international community and the welcoming atmosphere created by the school provide the best environment for exploring your creativity.
Antonio added: “There are a lot of things to do in Paris. If you like art, if you’re very creative, I think France, and this city, are the best option. I really recommend studying here.”
