Planning to study engineering at university? These five videos will help you decide whether an engineering degree is really for you, which type of engineering you should specialize in, and what to expect both during and after your studies…
1. Should You Study Engineering?
If you’re struggling to decide whether engineering is for you, this is a good video to start with. Computer science graduate Jacob talks through what engineering is (and what it isn’t), the main skills you’ll develop, and the general pros and cons of choosing an engineering degree. He also proves that studying engineering is entirely compatible with a sense of humor.
2. How Much Math is Used in Engineering?
Worried about all the mathematics required for an engineering degree? You’re not alone! In response to popular demand, mechanical engineering graduate Dave Xiang outlines exactly how much mathematics you’ll need, both during your studies and for most engineering jobs. He also offers some tips on choosing the right math classes, in order to complete your engineering degree without making life unnecessarily hard for yourself!
3. The Art of Being an Engineer
Now it’s time to get way beyond the mathematics, to the overriding raison d’etre of engineering. In this TEDx talk, engineering student Philippe calls for a more socially engaged and collaborative approach to engineering, in which engineers work alongside innovators from all disciplines to solve global challenges. Pretty inspiring stuff. (Plus he’s got some tips on how to make sure you’re super-employable by the time you graduate.)

4. Advice for Future Female Engineers
Next up, some advice for future female engineering students, who remain a minority in many engineering departments, from women currently studying a range of engineering degrees. In fact, this advice is likely to be useful for all students, regardless of gender, background or subject!
5. Is an Engineering Degree Worth it?
Last but not least, the ultimate question: is an engineering degree likely to be worth all the time, energy and money you’ll invest? This video from an electrical engineering graduate reviews the likely payoffs – including typical engineering salaries, job satisfaction and long-term prospects. (Spoiler: yes, it’s worth it – but only if engineering is genuinely your true passion.)
