With 800 years of history and 50 years of excellence, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is today the largest university of humanities and social sciences in France. Its motto is: Omnibus sapientia, unicuique excellentia - Knowledge for all, excellence for everyone. Today more than 45,000 students are enrolled in the university’s 10 teaching and research departments and 4 institutes.
THREE MAIN AREAS OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
Arts and Humanities
This field includes the departments of history, geography, philosophy, art history and archaeology, and arts. Some of its courses are unique and exclusive in France (e.g. aesthetics and restoration of works of art). The research centres associated with these departments have an international audience, and some of its preparatory courses are among the most renowned in France.
Economics and Management
Economics, management, and mathematics and computer science form this second field. It is one of the largest French university centres of excellence, both in terms of the number of theses defended in the various disciplines offered and in terms of the numerous international partnerships established in the past few years.
Law and Political Science
This area brings together the departments of law (public law, private law, international, European and comparative law), political science, labour and social studies (economic and social administration and social law). The Sorbonne Law School gathers the university’s main courses and research teams in the field of law.
A RESEARCH-ORIENTED UNIVERSITY
Research at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne follows a centuries-old tradition of excellence while constantly evolving in its subjects and methods. The university’s 1,460 teachers/researchers are divided into 37 research teams, 24 of which are joint research units with the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and/or the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement). Over 250 PhD theses and Habilitations are defended every year in the university’s 10 doctoral schools and more than 200 conferences and symposiums are organised each year. Founded more than 50 years ago, the Éditions de la Sorbonne form a huge asset which includes nearly 1,000 titles in its catalogue, with 60 books and journals published each year.

Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne occupies some of Paris’s greatest architectural treasures. Based for centuries on a large campus in the Latin Quarter of Paris, the university has been expanding since the 1970s by building new facilities in other parts of the capital and its region. Today, the university has over 20 locations in the Île-de-France region. Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne also maintains one of France’s largest library systems. The crown jewel is the Sorbonne Interuniversity Library, which contains nearly two million printed volumes.
Faithful to its international dimension and in line with today’s context, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne has developed a dense network of partnerships with key universities in 75 countries, covering the five continents. This strong international presence makes it possible for Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne to offer provision for the international joint supervision of PhDs, Erasmus Mundus programmes, joint degree programmes, and many delocalised degrees within foreign partner universities. Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne is also a founding member of the European university alliance Una Europa, along with ten other institutions. The university is ranked in a variety of world university rankings, reflecting its position as a leading global institution in research and education, especially in the field of humanities and social sciences.
Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne’s clear policy of engagement in public and economic life has resulted in an equally rich network of relations with public and private sector actors. The Panthéon-Sorbonne Foundation has partnered with the economic sectors in order to develop and support innovative projects in the field of higher education and research, based on four pillars: students, international, research and training, and heritage.
