The University of Szeged (SZTE) is is located in Szeged at the Southern border of Hungary. It is said to be the safest city in Hungary and a popular university town in Europe.

The University of Szeged traces its origins back to the 16th century, and it is one of Hungary’s most prestigious and competitive universities, regularly listed as one of the best national institutions by the QS World University Rankings. Our educational and research activities related to natural sciences also have an excellent global reputation, and the university is regularly ranked among the top 500 institutions for physical and life sciences by the QS University Subject Rankings.

Health and Life Sciences have a long-standing tradition at the University of Szeged with Albert Szent-Györgyi, winner of Nobel Prize 1937 and Katalin Karikó, winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 - just to mention two of our most prominent scientists.

The University offers more than 70 full-time international degree programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral level in English as well as in German and French.  There are students from all over the world and the number of international students reaches 4,500 from about 130 countries.

Available programs

There are 11 Bachelors’ programs offered, as well as three undivided programs for high school students intending to study Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy.  See the subjects covered on the website.

The application process varies by program, but there are some general requirements all undergraduate hopefuls need to follow:

  •  Submission of an online application form
  • Paying application and entrance exam fees
  • Upload academic documents to demonstrate your knowledge and language proficiency
  • An entrance examination in person or online may also be required


The average tuition fee for undergraduates is €2,500, but humanities programs cost €1,500 on average and health program tuition is around €3,100 on average.

International students who wish to apply for an undergraduate program will do so via the online application platform.

There are 25 Master’s programs available at the University of Szeged.

The application process varies depending on the program; however, there are certain general requirements all applicants need to follow. These include:

The average tuition fees at postgraduate level is €2,5000, but some programs may cost €1,900 (legal studies) or €8,000 for medicine programs.

University information

Application to the University of Szeged happens via the online DreamApply application platform.

The application platform differs in color from self-financed students to scholarship holders. Please make sure to submit your application to the relevant platform. To learn about the relevant platform for you, please visit this website.

Application Step by Step

1. Choose your programme and read the programme description on our website. Each descriptions includes a direct link to the online application platform.

2. Click on Apply Now button in the programme description and sign up for the online application platform.

3. Fill in the online application form, upload the necessary documents and make sure to pay the application fee.

4. Check your mailbox regularly. The system will remind you to complete the tasks.

What happens after?

After you have submitted your application, your documents are going to be evaluated and you may be invited to take an entrance exam.

6. Pay the entrance exam fee, if applicable, and do your best at the exam.

7. If you are accepted, you will receive our Admission Letter through the system including the tuition fee.

8. Once the tuition fee is credited, your place is reserved at SZTE.

9. In case you need a visa, make sure to arrange an appointment at the Hungarian Consulate or Embassy and present your Admission Letter and the proof of payment of the tuition fee (in most of the cases of SZTE programmes you are asked to pay the first two semesters (one year).

Admission Requirements

The application process varies by Faculty, however, there are certain elements of it which apply to each applicant.

 General Requirements

Submit in an online application form, paying application and/or entrance exam fees, uploading documents presenting applicants academic background and the required language proficiency and a general health certificate. In addition to SZTE requirement, some Faculties may ask for the specific Faculty-based requirements: a motivational letter, entrance examination or individual online interview.

Exemption from English language exam certificate

During the application to the programmes of the Faculty of Science and Informatics those applicants are not required to provide the English language exam certificates who are natives of one of the following countries and can officially demonstrate that their academic studies have been conducted in English. SZTE is often referred as the city within a city since its buildings are located close to each other.  The Universities have 12 faculties and each faculty has its own buildings.

SZTE boasts central Europe’s biggest university library, the SZTE Klebelsberg Library with nearly 3 million documents across four floors. In fact, the library is often listed among the 50 most amazing university libraries in the world.

Student life

There are about 4,500 International students from about 130 countries, making up 20 percent of the student body.

SZTE offers a number of cultural and sporting programs throughout the year in the town and the university, including the International Cultural Event (ICE) where students and ambassadors are also invited.

SZIN (Youth Days of Szeged) takes place on the bank of the river Tisza every August where attendees can enjoy concerts across four days.

Student residence is usually provided to international students who have obtained a governmental scholarship. Others may rent an apartment and may use the assistance provided by the University to find their accommodation.
