Yesterday we celebrated the launch of the 10th anniversary edition of the QS World University Rankings® – attracting hundreds of thousands of visits within the first 24 hours, front-page news coverage around the world, and some interesting conversations on social media – including a debate about whether the UK needs to find a new compound term to describe its leading universities (could “UCL-Imp” be the new “Oxbridge”?).
Published annually since 2004, the QS World University Rankings have rapidly become one of the most widely used resources among those making decisions about higher education. While primarily targeted at prospective international students, they’re also increasingly consulted by academics and university leaders, journalists, parents, employers and government agencies.
Create your own personalized university ranking
The results can be easily sorted – by country and by performance indicator – using the interactive ranking table online. But this year, there’s an even easier way to access all the data collected, by downloading the free official QS World University Rankings app.
The app allows users to browse the overall rankings data, as well as getting more in-depth information on each of the 800+ universities featured. Most excitingly of all, there’s also the option to create your own personalized ranking, by deciding which of the performance indicators used are most important to you.
For example, you may decide you just want to focus on finding universities with the strongest global reputations among academics and graduate employers. You may want to focus primarily on research impact, on the ratio of academic staff to students, or on the international diversity of the university community. The app allows you to choose how much emphasis to place on each of these indicators, customizing the ranking methodology to match your own priorities.
In addition, you can access data on university size, age, specialization level, research focus, average tuition fees, and subject strengths – as highlighted by the QS World University Rankings by Faculty.
